The project that was shot by @elledecor last spring and still hasn’t been published. Editors have come and gone and with these things you never know. But, this was one fun project! Of Angles And Bulkheads

A fun little project we did for a wonderful and highly enthusiastic client (and the whole home was featured last year in Interiors magazine). This is the master bedroom featuring our Rijks rug from our #Rajirmrugs line. The client was hooked on painting the room a navy blue but, didn’t know how to given all the turns and bulk heads in the room. And I decided that instead of fighting the numerous angles and bulkheads in the room, we’ll just celebrate them! Highlighting with paint turned all the negatives in the room into a plausible play of light and shadow which the client absolutely loves. My favorite though is the original 1930s brick wall, once the exterior wall of the home. Imagine that! If the ceiling and blue walls were not there, he’d be sleeping with the skies!! 😀

Belgium - Part Three

If the mind’s eye can steal moments, this is my loot for the day! .

Visited Ghent, a university town about a half hour train ride from Brussels. With a lot less crowds (compared to Brugges) yet a very tightly woven town of structures both old and new with only the sky and the canals to give you relief and of course the delightfully young and friendly locals. A town that charms you with it’s architectural verve, the strong smell of coffee, the mild sweetness of it’s cakes and the feeling that you could never really get lost here and it’s all one big, giant loop peppered with monuments and roads and trams that whisk you away! .

Belgium - Part Two

Rues et allées en Brugge .

.

Brugge, a quaint town an hour by train from Brussels is known as the Venice of the North for it’s canals. It has also become more of a tourist hub ever since the movie ‘In Brugges’ (which we’ve not seen yet) was released. Despite the crowds and the rain, we found it very charming especially when we walked away from the crowds and roamed the quieter streets. We are in the habit of discovering places by walking. So walk we did and then paused for hot chocolate and walked some more and paused again for some bread and cheese and a terrific Jasmine Tea and continued walking until we could not anymore...the photos speak better of the town than I could possibly describe. .

Belgium - Part One

From our spring break trip to Belgium three weeks ago...

Landed early this morning here in beautiful Brussels! 💜 Kicking off spring break with hubs and our son! Our hotel is right in the center of Brussels in Grand Place. Caught up with some zzzzs as none of us slept on the flight and then out to get some fluffy waffles and some of their chocolats délicieux!! 🍫🌰 Followed by a mid day walk around the Grand Place in Brussels...

A Dining Room

Dining should be a pleasure everyday. The view from every vantage point should be enhanced. Most importantly the dining room should draw you in, envelope you in wonder and anticipation and immerse you in the food, the drinks, the laughter and the company.

This client’s home is very special. Every room, every space. Their dining room is nothing short of magical when the double chandeliers turn on and the characters in my Mural come alive to welcome the guests!

The Elephant in the Room

Sometimes the largess of a space is precisely the elephant in the room. And when you double the challenge that despite the size, it is actually a pass through space - you really have your hands full. That’s when I took a step back and given that the client is a young bachelor and how he uses the space, a classic lounge is what came to mind. Not the Mad Men kind, but, a classical one. After all his hero is Thomas Jefferson. And believe it or not, I did not know that until I was presenting him the plans with a Jefferson mural! What are the odds?!! .

Meaningful Design

In the beginning, my first eight clients were all doctors. And then slowly writers, lawyers, government officials started becoming clients. The one thing that’s common to all my clients though, is that they are all global travelers, who have immersed in other cultures and proud to bring back home a piece of their travels and most certainly want it all incorporated into their home. This client is no exception. In this one room alone there are pieces we incorporated from at least eleven cultures and countries into a story of where they’ve been, where they are and where they want to go. It’s what I call meaningful design. Design that captures exactly what the clients are about. It takes one to know one.
